BBE / THE BAKING NOTEBOOK

The source and your interpretation are different records

Keep what the reference says distinct from the explanation you bring to it.

Read the source.
Keep the question.
Return to the detail.

01

Give the source an identity

Record the actual creator or responsible publisher, title and place where the relevant material can be found. A vague label such as online recipe makes it difficult to return to the original context. Keep the source detail proportionate to the task, but clear enough that another reader does not need to reconstruct the reference from your memory or an isolated screenshot.

02

Name the particular passage

Identify the part of the source that addresses your question. A reference may be useful for one point without supporting every statement in your note. If you have read only an extract, make that limit visible. Keeping the passage in context helps prevent a short summary from becoming a larger claim attributed to a source that never established it.

03

Write your explanation separately

Describe how you understand the passage in your own words while leaving the original available. A summary and the source do different jobs. Do not silently add an assumption and then cite the reference as support for the entire combined statement. A clear distinction makes the note easier to review and gives the next discussion a specific point to examine.

04

Keep uncertainty identifiable

If a term, stage or relationship is unclear, write the question beside it. Avoid smoothing a gap into a confident explanation simply because the paragraph reads better that way. The uncertainty may be the most useful part of the learning note. Bring it to an appropriate complete reference or responsible educator rather than turning the private account into an improvised method.

05

Review the reason for the reference

Ask why this source belongs in the note. Does it address the actual question or merely look relevant because it concerns a similar bake? A purposeful selection can remain small. More links do not automatically create a clearer explanation, especially when the reader cannot tell which statement each source supports or what the original context leaves unanswered.

06

Retain a revisable account

Your interpretation may change after reading more of the source or discussing the question. Keep the reason for a revision understandable instead of making the earlier account appear to have contained a confirmed answer all along. A private source note supports careful reading; it is not a validated recipe, institutional record or approved assessment of someone’s practical competence.
